Be Verbs | Use of am, is, are, was, were.

Hope you people are fine right now. Okay, in the last blog, we have discussed the action verbs, now let's talk about be verbs...

Be Verb

Be verbs tell us about someone’s state of being.
[ Be শব্দটির অর্থ হল ‘হওয়া’। Be verbs দ্বারা কারো কিছু হওয়াকে বোঝানো হয়।]

Present/বর্তমান – am (হই), is (হয়), are (হই/হয়),
Past/অতীত-  was (ছিলাম/ছিল), were (ছিলাম/ছিলে/ছিল),

Usages of the be verbs:

Present (am/is/are):-

Am (হই/আছি):-

   Am only comes after I. [Am একমাত্র I এর পরেই লিখতে হয়।]
 I am. (আমি হই।)

Is (হয়/আছে):-

a)  Is comes after the subject which is a third person singular number.
[Third person singular subject এর পর is বসাতে হয়।]
 He is. (সে হয়), She is. (সে হয়), Ram is. (রাম হয়), Rahim is. (রহিম হয়), kolkata is. কলকাতা হয়), The boy is. (ছেলেটি হয়), The cat is.(বেড়ালটি হয়) etc.

b) Is comes after tow or more subjects each separated by or.
[দুই বা ততোধিক subject -এর প্রতিটি যদি or দ্বারা বিভক্ত হয়, তাহলে তাদের পর is বসে।]
My brother or my sister is...
He or she is...

Are (হই/হয়/আছি/আছে/আছো):-

   Are comes after –
a)  a plural subject [we (আমরা), you (তোমরা), they (তারা)].
We are (আমরা হই), you are (তোমরা হও), they are (তারা হয়) etc.

b) You (as you is always plural / যেহেতু, you সবসময়ই plural.)
You are (তুমি হও).

c) When two or more singular subjects are separated by and or commas (,). [ যখন দুই বা ততোধিক subjects-কে and বা comma (,) দিয়ে আলাদা করা থাকে।]

His brother and he are...
Ram and shyam are...
My friends and I were...
Rahul, Tanu, Vivek, Riju are...

Past (was/were):


Was comes after a singular subject like Ihe, she, name of any single person or thing or animal.
[Was যে কোনো singular subject এর পর বসে।]

was a student.(আমি একজন ছাত্র ছিলাম।)
He was a bad boy. (ও খারাপ ছেলে ছিল।)
John was a doctor. (John ছিল একজন ডাক্তার।)


Were is usually used after –
a) The plural subjects. [we (আমরা), you (তোমরা), they (তারা)]

We were (আমরা ছিলাম),
you were (তোমরা ছিলে),
they were (তারা ছিল).

b) You (you is always plural)
You were (তুমি ছিলে।)

c) When two or more singular subjects are separated by and or commas (,).
His brother and he were...
Ram and shyam were...
My friends and I were...
Rahul, Tanujeet, Vivek, Raju were...


In the future tense, there is no certain be verb. In fact, be itself comes after shall or will.
[Future tense-এ সেরকম কোনো be verb নেই। তার জায়গায় be-কেই shall বা will -এর পরে নিয়ে আসা হয়।]

Shall be:-

    Shall be is used after first person subject (I and we).
I shall be a medic. (আমি ডাক্তার হব।)
We shall not be so rich. (আমরা এত ধনী হব না।)

Will be:-

    Will be is used after any singular or plural subject except I and we.
[I এবং we ছাড়া যেকোনো singular অথবা plural subject এর পরে will be হয়।]
He will be a good teacher. (তিনি একজন ভালো শিক্ষক হবেন।)
Vivek will be an Engineer. (বিবেক এক ইঞ্জিনিয়ার হবে।)


Fill in the blanks with the suitable be verbs from the brackets:
a) He _____ (am/is/are) a good student.
b) They _____ (am/is/are) farmers.
c) Reena_____ (am/is/are) a painter.
d) She or her sister _____ (am/is/are) in the room.
e) I _____ (am/is/are) a football-player
f) Joy _____ (was/were) a teacher.
g) He and his brother _____ (was/were) guilty.
h) You _____ (was/were) in your house.
i) We _____ (was/were) players.
j) Her uncle and aunt _____(was/were) ideal couple.

Modal Auxiliary Verbs

   *Modal is the adjective of mode.

   A modal auxiliary verb is used in a sentence, to express someone's mood (ability, possibility, to take and give permissions etc).

1.Can (পারা):Can-এর ব্যবহার:

Can is used to express-

One’s ability to do something:
[কেউ কিছু করার ক্ষমতা রাখে,- এটা বোঝাতে can ব্যবহার করা হয়।]
I can do this. (আমি এটি করতে পারি।)
They can win. (তারা জিততে পারে।)

For negative sentences, use a 'not' after 'can'.
[Negative sentence তৈরী করতে হলে can-এর পর not ব্যবহার করতে হয়।]
You cannot overcome. (তুমি/তোমরা জয় করতে পারবে না।)
Ram can not drive. (রাম গাড়ি চালাতে পারে না।) etc.

Can is also used to take permission:
[অনুমতি নেওয়ার সময় can ব্যবহার করা হয়।]
Can I do this? (আমি কি এটা করতে পারি?)

For composing a sentence of different tenses, we have to have the knowledge of different forms of a verb as - base form and other (verb forms- v1 v2 v3 v4 v5).
