This is the last post on Interchange of Degrees of Comparison. Hope you all have read the other two – Interchange of Positive Degree and Comparative Degree and Interchange of Positive Degree and Superlative Degree and understood very well.

There can be two types of this interchange of degrees. 

First start with type 1




Type I —

Superlative Degree to Comparative Degree:

Superlative – He is the tallest boy in the class. 

(Use the positive degree of the adjective ‘tallest’ and rewrite the sentence.)


Steps to Change Superlative Degree to Comparative Degree: 

Step 1:

Use the subject of superlative degree as the subject of comparative degree.  

(Here, the subject is ‘He’)

Comparative – He...

Remember: The subject of superlative and the subject of comparative are the same unlike the other degree changings (— Positive–Comparative and Comparative–Superlative) where the subject and the object interchange their positions.


Step 2:

Use a suitable verb.

(Here, the verb is a be verb – ‘is’.)

Comparative – He is...


Step 3

Put the comparative degree of the adjective removing the definite article ‘the’. 

(Here, the adjective is ‘tallest’; comparative degree = ‘tall’)

Comparative – He is taller...


Step 4:

Use ‘than’.

Comparative – He is taller than...


Step 5:

Use- any other + singular noun / all other + plural noun + in/of + others.

Comparative – He is taller than any other boy in the class.

Or,

Comparative – He is taller than all other boys in the class.


Examples:–

Superlative – Tagore was the greatest writer in the history of literature. 

Comparative – Tagore was greater than any other writer in the history of literature. 


Superlative –  Russia is the largest country in the world.

Comparative – Russia is larger than all other countries in the world.


Superlative – She is the poorest girl.  

Comparative – She is poorer than any other girl.


Superlative – Our house is the smallest house in the city. 

Comparative – Our house is smaller than all other houses in the city. 


Superlative – The cow is the most useful animal.

Comparative – The cow is more useful than any other animal.





Comparative Degree to Superlative Degree:

Comparative – The family wealthier than all other families in the village.


Steps to Change Comparative Degree into Superlative Degree: 

Step 1:

Use the subject of comparative degree as the subject of superlative degree

(Here, the subject is ‘The family’)

Superlative – The family...


Step 2:

Use a suitable verb.

(Here, the verb is a be verb ‘is’)

Superlative – The family is...


Step 3:

Use the superlative degree of the adjective. A superlative degree follows the definite article ‘the’. That means- the + superlative degree

(Here, the adjective is ‘wealthier’; the superlative degree is – ‘wealthiest’)

Superlative – The family is the wealthiest...


Step 4:

Remove ‘than’ and ‘any other’ or ‘all other’.


Step 5:

Use of all + plural noun; the noun which is used after ‘all other’ or ‘any other’.

Superlative – The family is the wealthiest of all families...


Step 6:

Put down the rest portion (of/in + others) after that.

(Here, it is “in the village”)

Superlative – The family is the wealthiest of all families in the village.

This is the answer.



Examples:–

Comparative – She is better than all other girls in the class.

Superlative – She is the best of all girls in the in the class. 


Comparative – Jack is stronger than any other boy in this house.

Superlative – Jack is the strongest of all boys in the house. 


Comparative – My grandmother is older than any other member of our family. 

Superlative – My grandmother is the oldest of all members of our family. 


Comparative – Africa is richer than any other subcontinent on this planet.

Superlative – Africa is the richest of all subcontinents on this planet.


Comparative – The turtle is slower than all other animals.

Superlative – The turtle is the slowest of all animals.




Type II —

Superlative Degree to Comparative Degree: 

When the Structure of superlative degree is –

Subject + verb + one of the + superlative degree of the adjective + plural noun + in/of + others.

Superlative – It is one of the oldest temples in the town.

Steps to Change Superlative Degree to Comparative Degree:

Step 1:

Use the subject of superlative degree as the subject of comparative degree.

(Here, the subject is ‘It’)

Comparative – It...

Remember: The subject of superlative and the subject of comparative are the same unlike the other degree changings (Positive–Comparative and Comparative–Superlative) where the subject and the object interchange their positions.


Step 2:

Use a suitable verb.

(Here, the verb is a be verb – ‘is’.)

Remove "one of the"


Step 4

Put the comparative degree of the adjective removing the definite article ‘the’

(Here, the adjective is ‘oldest’; comparative degree of 'oldest' = ‘older’)

Step 5:

Use ‘than’.

Comparative – It is older than...


Step 6:

Use- most other or many other or some other + plural noun + in/of + others.

Comparative – It is older than most other temples in the town.


Examples:–

Superlative – Martin Luther was one of the greatest leaders in the history.

Comparative – Martin Luther was greater than most other leaders in the history. 


Superlative – Mr. Tata is one of the richest businessman in the country.

Comparative – Mr. Tata is richer than most other businessmen in the country.


Superlative – Mohit is one of the fastest runners in the village.

Comparative – Mohit is faster than most other runners in the village.




Comparative Degree to Superlative Degree: 

Comparative – He is taller then most other candidates.

Steps to Change Comparative Degree into Superlative Degree: 


Step 1:

Use the subject of comparative degree as the subject of superlative degree. 

(Here the subject is ‘He’)

Superlative – He...


Step 2:

Use a suitable verb.

(Here the verb is a be verb – ‘is’)

Superlative – He is..

(‘is’ is here a suitable be verb for ‘He’)


Step 3:

Use one of the after the verb.

Superlative – He is one of the...


Step 4:

Put the superlative degree of the adjective

(Here, the adjective is ‘taller’ and superlative degree is ‘tallest’)

Superlative – He is one of the tallest...


Step 5:

Use the object of the comparative as the object of superlative. The object should be plural number.

(The object is ‘candidates’ and it is a plural number) 

Superlative – He is one of the tallest candidates.

This is the answer.




Examples:–

Comparative – Rose is more beautiful than most other flowers.

Superlative – Rose is one of the most beautiful flowers.


Comparative – Milk is healthier than many other foods.

Superlative – Milk is one of the healthiest foods.


Comparative – The cow is more useful than many other animals.

Superlative – The cow is one of the most useful animals.
